Building a Collaborative Learning Community in Second Life

Katherine Watson

Audio greeting! (text equivalent: Hello, this is Katherine Watson. Welcome to my website about Second Life and education. I hope you find it informative as well as fun!)

Virtual worlds, or multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs), enable users to make social connections with people from around the world. Second Life is an immensely popular and rapidly expanding MUVE. It stands out among virtual worlds because of its unique set of features that empower users, giving them greater control of the virtual space.

With its unique set of features, Second Life promotes community building and enables collaboration.

These features include:

This website explains these features and provides links to additional resources or examples of how these features are being used in education.

Included on this website are also an essay, about collaboration in Second Life, and two lesson plans for using this site: Lesson Plan Title 1 and Lesson Plan Title 2, and a I said in my greeting, I've tried to include a little bit of fun.

Please note: I installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots (from Snap.com) that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more. Sometimes Snap Shots brings you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you "look ahead," before deciding if you want to follow a link or not. Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.
