Building a Collaborative Learning Community in Second Life

Virtual worlds, or multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs), enable users to make social connections with people from around the world. Second Life is an immensely popular and rapidly expanding MUVE. It stands out among virtual worlds because of its unique set of features that empower users, giving them greater control of the virtual space.

With its unique set of features, Second Life promotes community building and enables collaboration.

These features include:

• Chat and Instant Messaging
• Voice
• Streaming Media
• Groups
• Land and Estate Tools
• Scripted Objects
• Building

This website explains these features and provides links to additional resources or examples of how these features are being used in education.
